We tried to set up a trigger in HR to notify the user at Check Calculation time if an employee's vacation balance went negative. We found that the trigger would only work if the employee's vacation balance was ALREADY negative prior to that check run.

1. If the employee's vacation balance was 5 hrs and on this check they used 10 hours, the trigger DID NOT activate (even though with this check they would end up at <5> hours).
2. If the employee's vacation balance was already <5> hrs, and on this check they used 10 more hours, the trigger DID activate (because the vacation balance was already negative).
3. If the employee's vacation balance was already <5> hrs, and on this check they didn't use any vacation, the trigger still activated (because the vacation balance was already negative).
4. If the employee's vacation balance was already <5> hrs, and on this check they had no time entered (not even vacation), the trigger DID NOT activate.

#2 and #3 seem to function appropriately, but #1 should trigger that the balance with this check is negative. It's hardly useful to create a trigger that won't actually trigger until the next payroll cycle, and then it will only trigger if the employee has a paycheck.

We contacted D&C regarding this, but apparently the trigger is working as designed. It seems like a faulty design to me if I can't rely on it to tell me when someone goes negative at the time they go negative.
