For payroll, we post to the GL using the Work Date option. We really should have the GL Date be a separate field for posting purposes so that we can use the true work date even when posting prior period adjustments for shortages, overrages, job moves, etc.... The GL Date could default to the work date if that period is open, otherwise either ask for the GL post date or use the first day of the open period. This causes us problems all the time with client audits because the date that shows up in payroll, job cost and T&M is NOT the real work date. We try to remember to manually enter the original date in the message field but it is still extremely hard to tie back and often times that is forgotten. On the T&M side, we have to manually override the work date to the real date so it presents properly on the invoice. However, then it is super hard to relate back to the job cost entry because it will have the work date of the payroll it was processed with. It just really causes all kinds of problems to not have TRUE activity for a specific work date without alot of extra manual work.
